What a shower remodel includes

Every shower is a little different, but the work usually comes down to these pieces.

Tear-out

Old tile, panels, glass and fixtures come out, so we can see the framing, the valve and the drain.

Waterproofing

A properly sloped shower pan and a waterproof layer behind the tile. This is the part you never see and the part that matters most.

Wall and floor tile

Subway, large-format, marble-look or stone-look wall tile, with mosaic or pebble tile on the floor for grip.

Niches and benches

Recessed niches sized for real bottles and built-in tiled benches, framed in while the walls are open.

Glass

Frameless hinged doors, sliding doors or fixed panels, measured after the tile is done so the fit is exact.

Fixtures

Shower heads, handheld sprayers and valve trim in chrome, matte black, brushed nickel or brushed gold.

What affects the price of a new shower

The size of the shower and how much changes behind the walls make the biggest difference.

  1. Size and layout

Retiling an existing shower costs less than enlarging it or moving the drain.

  2. Tile

Large-format tile goes up faster than small tile or detailed patterns. Natural stone costs more than porcelain.

  3. Glass

Frameless glass is a real line item. A sliding door or a fixed panel can bring it down.

  4. Extras

Benches, extra niches, a handheld sprayer or a rain head each add a little.

Shower remodeling questions

How long does a shower remodel take?

Less than a full bathroom remodel, since only the shower changes. Tile and glass are the two steps that take the longest. Glass is measured after the tile is finished, so there's usually a short wait for it. You'll get a timeline in the written estimate.

Can you fix a shower that's leaking?

Yes. A lot of shower remodels start with a leak. Once the old tile comes out we can see where the water got in and fix the cause, not just the tile.

Can I keep my tub and just redo the shower walls?

Yes. Retiling around an existing tub with new fixtures and a glass door is a very common shower update. See the hall bath project above.

Can I switch from a tub to a walk-in shower?

Yes. That's a tub-to-shower conversion, and we have a page just for it.
